Risk disclaimer
Strike-relationship math only; interest and dividends are ignored.
Why separate the two?
Intrinsic value is what exercising now would capture; time value is the premium for remaining time and volatility — it decays to zero by expiry.
A higher time-value share means more “time premium” you are paying.
How to use
- Choose call or put.
- Enter spot, strike and premium.
- Click Calculate for the breakdown and share.
Formula
- Call intrinsic = max(spot − strike, 0)
- Put intrinsic = max(strike − spot, 0)
- Time value = premium − intrinsic
Example
Call spot 105, strike 100, premium 8 → intrinsic 5, time 3, time share 37.5%.
If premium is below intrinsic the input is invalid and you will be prompted.
FAQ
Does time value always go to zero?
Yes at expiry; meanwhile it can fluctuate with volatility, but the trend is decay.
