Why track maintenance margin?

Maintenance margin is the minimum equity to keep a position. Below it, the exchange reduces or liquidates — approaching it is your margin-call zone.

Margin ratio = equity ÷ maintenance × 100%; the closer it gets to 100%, the more dangerous.

How to use

  1. Enter current position (notional) value.
  2. Enter the maintenance margin rate (default 0.5%, tiered by size).
  3. Enter current position equity and click Calculate.

Formula

  • Maintenance = position value × maintenance rate
  • Buffer = equity − maintenance
  • Margin ratio = equity ÷ maintenance × 100%

Example

Position 20,000, rate 0.5%, equity 200 → maintenance 100, buffer 100, ratio 200%.

If equity falls to 90 the ratio is 90% — below 100% means liquidation warning.
