How does average-cost split?
The sold part takes cost = sold qty × average cost; the difference from the sell price is realized P&L.
The remaining position keeps the same average cost regardless of the sell price.
How to use
- Enter the average cost and total quantity.
- Enter the sell quantity and sell price.
- Optionally enter the current price for remaining value and floating P&L.
Formula
- Proceeds = sold × sell price
- Realized = proceeds − sold × average cost
- Remaining = total − sold
Example
Avg 100, total 2; sell 1 @120 → proceeds 120, realized +20; remaining 1 still costs 100.
Selling more than you hold is rejected as invalid.
FAQ
vs FIFO?
Average-cost does not track lots; FIFO accounting would differ where applicable.
