What does the profit factor show?

PF = Gross Profit ÷ Gross Loss. Above 1 means profits cover losses; higher indicates stronger quality, independent of win rate.

Net profit = Gross Profit − Gross Loss, useful alongside other metrics.

How to use

  1. Enter the gross profit and gross loss for a period.
  2. Click Calculate to see the profit factor and net profit.

Formula

  • Profit Factor = Gross Profit ÷ Gross Loss
  • Net Profit = Gross Profit − Gross Loss

Example

Profit 3,000, loss 1,000 → PF 3, net 2,000.

PF above ~1.5–2 is commonly considered strong, but check sample size and drawdown too.

FAQ

Is high PF always good?

Consider sample size, drawdown and execution; a few huge winners can inflate PF.

Relation to win rate?

Low win rates with high payoff can still yield high PF; view both together.
